With Memorial Day weekend upon us, some may choose to celebrate with BBQ's, fireworks, picnics, etc. For a kiddo with sensory processing disorder, this can turn into the scariest environment. Help your child prepare for success with these tips.

  1. Noise-cancelling headphones work really well for kiddos sensitive to loud noises whether its fireworks, loud music, or loud talking.

  2. Create a social story about what to expect for the day starting with getting ready in the morning, the car ride, and what to expect at the destination.

  3. When you arrive to your destination, work with your child on finding a safe place they can retreat to when feeling overwhelmed.

  4. If you know you have a picky eater, bring foods they will eat. Don't have the expectation they will eat the cheeseburger when they have never done so before.

  5. Parents, keep your expectations realistic. If you know your child doesn't do well past 7pm, don't expect they will make it to 9pm. Set them up for success by knowing their cues and when it's time to leave.

  6. LOTS OF PRAISE! Make sure your child knows when they are doing well!
